Instagram Trials Location Tags in Notes Feature

Instagram is currently testing a new feature within its Notes inbox prompts. Some users now have the ability to add a location tag to their Notes queries.

As shown in the example screens, users in the test pool can add a location marker to their note. This marker will then link to the Instagram location page for that place.

According to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, people often use notes to share thoughts, moods, and even places. By adding location tags, Instagram aims to make it easier to connect with others over where they’re hanging out, get inspiration for new spots to visit, and more.

Instagram first launched Notes in December of last year, providing users with a simple way to initiate conversations in the app. Users can add 60-character notes that are visible to all of their connections at the top of their inbox.

This feature has proven popular, particularly among younger users. Consequently, Instagram has been expanding Notes’ functionality to include audio clips, song highlights, and other inbox connection features, such as Broadcast Channels. This effort aligns with the increasing trend of individuals sharing posts with smaller groups instead of publicly posting to their main feeds in social apps.

Instagram has been striving to re-establish connections with younger audiences, following the rise of TikTok. Notes has played a crucial role in this endeavor, helping the platform regain engagement with this demographic. As a result, it’s no surprise that Instagram continues to test and introduce new elements to Notes, in order to maximize user engagement.

The new location tag test is currently live for selected Instagram users.
